Answering A Mariner’s Fan Question..

Are the Mariners far away from competing in the playoffs?

Not too far away I think! Let’s start with the starting rotation, despite yesterday’s loss the Mariners have one of the best 1-2 starters combos in the sport in Felix and Kuma. Unfortunately Brandon Maurer isn’t going to cut it. Basically what I’m saying is, for the Mariners to be competitive their rotation must have a healthy Taijuan Walker and James Paxton. And the #5 spot would come down to the better of Roenis Elias and Chris Young. So a rotation of Felix, Iwakuma, Paxton, Walker, Elias/Young, is pretty formidable wouldn’t you say?

Hitting wise, I think the Mariners have a pretty good start of a formula, if that makes any sense? I really like the duo of James Jones and Michael Saunders at the top of the lineup. Both know their jobs of getting on base and are getting very smart with their at bats. Robinson Cano is playing sensationally, hitting .330. It would be nice if he hit a few home runs but it’s hard to argue against the Mariners best hitter on the roster. The problem really lies in the team not having a “power” hitter that can drive him in. I don’t know Cano’s exact on base percentage, but that’s the thing he’s been getting on base, and no one has been driving him in! And here in lies the other thing I think the team needs to be playoff worthy besides Paxton and Walker, one more power bat ideally right handed.

And yes Kendrys Morales would probably solve this problem. Being a switch hitter, he can hit for a little power, and I really think he could be the perfect bat behind Cano that can drive hitters like Jones, Saunders, and Cano in, which would be really good if the team is fighting for the playoffs. Problem is, it’s gonna take Morales some time to get game-ready and the team is going to have some competition for his services, especially if he’s waiting until after the draft. I find it hard to believe the team would let a division rival like the Texas Rangers take Morales away from them, but we’ll see.

Thoughts?
